Restaurant Review: Lisa’s Pizzeria

Lisa’s Pizzeria is located near the vibrant UWM Campus, on the west side of Oakland Avenue.  The restaurant is in an assuming building and if you are not careful, you may miss it. In my opinion, this is a classic, throwback pizza joint. It has been around since the 1960’s and it has a very personal and intimate feel.

Now, the word intimate can be substituted for cozy and/or small. If you intend to go for pizza on a weekend, it can get a bit crowded. Just be aware that you may have to wait a bit for a seat. Lisa’s also offers take out or delivery.

We headed to Lisa’s last weekend with a group of six at about 8:00pm. The restaurant was crowded, but we did not have to wait that long for a table. After about ten minutes we were seated and had ordered drinks.

Classic restaurants means classic menu. For appetizers they offer Italian staples such as Breaded Mushrooms, Mozzarella Sticks,  Fried Eggplant and of course, Garlic Bread.

For dinner, we had both a standard cheese pizza and the Deluxe. The cheese pizza was loaded with cheese and was a table favorite. The deluxe pizza was also very good and came loaded with sausage, mushroom, pepperoni, olives, onions and green peppers. It is abundantly clear that everything is made fresh and we really enjoyed all of the toppings.

Now, onto the crust. For a pizza place, this is tremendously important. Personally, I love thin crust pizza. Simply put, Lisa’s  has thin crust nailed to perfection. The sauce also got my attention as their was an element of sweetness that made it unique and different from other places in town. If you are worried about pricing, don’t be.  Pricing at this place is in line with most pizza places in the city. A small 12 inch pizza will be in the $12-13 range while and extra large will push $22 for the supreme or deluxe.

While we did not try anything but pizza, the restaurant does offer a number of other dishes. We saw lasagna, manicotti, spaghetti, and even ribs on the menu. The menu definitely has something for everyone.

What makes this place fun is the atmosphere and the unique feel that you do not get at other restaurants. The character is built in from the ground up, and that makes for a very enjoyable evening. The service is great, the food is great and the atmosphere is perfect. So, what else could you be looking for at a pizza place? Stop by Lisa’s, we highly recommend it.
