Restaurant Review: La Chimenea

Located in Germantown, La Chiminea is a mexican restaurant that serves up good food and a lively atmosphere. It is a little out of the way, but for fans of Mexican food, this should be on the list.

The bar area is the first area all diners will notice. An open area and tall ceilings give the feeling of space. There are a number of seats at the bar, some high top tables and a couple of televisions for those looking to take in a game. It is a nice atmosphere and a good spot to have a margarita or beer prior to the meal. For those inclined to just hang at the bar all night, they serve their entire menu.

In the interest of full disclosure, this is a place that we have visited on a number of occasions. We have tried a number of different items on the menu and have eaten both lunch and dinner at this establishment.

First off, all diners will receive complimentary chips and salsa. The chips are made fresh and are hard to stop eating. Just as an advisory, the salsa they serve is relatively hot. For those like me, I definitely enjoy the kick, some may find it a bit over the top.

One of the classic menu items is the traditional taco salad. First off, be warned, it is large. A fresh tortilla bowl, lettuce and your choice of meat are included. As toppings; sour cream, cheese, salsa, tomatoes, and guac is available. The salad will run in the $11.00 range depending on the meat choice, but it is a very solid entree.

My personal favorites are the fajita dishes. Served piping hot, the fajitas come with the standard toppings and a nice blend of grilled peppers and onions. They are available with chicken, steak, or shrimp. Again, this item will run diners bout $11.00 depending on the choice of protein.

For lunch, the steal and chorizo taco is a light choice and very affordable. For less than $7.00 diners get two small tacos filled with chopped steak and ground chorizo. A very nice meal served with rice and beans.

The restaurant has a great lunch special and serves its food very quickly. As a result, it is a convenient spot to have a quick lunch for business.

La Chiminea is an enjoyable Mexican restaurant that does not get a lot of attention in the Milwaukee area. If you are looking for a solid menu, good food, and a fun atmosphere, consider headed out to Germantown for great Mexican.
