Located in Brookfield, HOM Woodfired Grill is the reincarnation of the former 8-12 Grill.
We stopped by for dinner recently, and I must say, I had no idea what to expect. I knew that a transition was taking place and that renovations were set to occur, so my expectations were tempered. I thought we might see construction or a limited menu, but I was wrong. This place absolutely blew me away. I could not even tell that renovations were taking place, and the menu was amazing.
First, the bar area is tremendous. This is a great spot to have a drink before dinner or even take in a game. It has an open concept feel and the design just encourages everyone to talk with one another. It is well lit and has doors that open to an outside patio, so if the weather is nice, everyone can enjoy. The bar staff was extremely friendly and we enjoyed spending time watching the Brewers game with them prior to our meal.
It is clear that an emphasis is put on customer interaction with the staff. I do not say this often, but during our experience at HOM, the service was perfect. The entire staff was courteous and accommodated our every need. They were extremely knowledgeable of the menu and made recommendations that we all enjoyed. I cannot think of one thing that I wish would have been better, it was that good.
Now, onto the food.
For an appetizer, we went with the Shrimp and Grits. Phenomenal. It was served andouille sausage and quite honestly, I could have simply had that as a meal. This was recommended by our waitress and I must say, she hit it out of the park. Highly recommended.
For dinner, we tried the fried chicken and the filet. First the fried chicken. Simply put, this might have been the best fried chicken i have ever had in Wisconsin. The chicken was so incredibly moist, and the batter was crispy yet light. The best part? They give you a ton of it! Everyone at our table was able to enjoy a bite, and the consensus was that it was the best we had ever tried. It is served with mac and cheese. The mac and cheese wasa great compliment and again, it was prepared perfectly. We also tried the filet, and were once again impressed with the way it was prepared. A perfect sear on the outside, and extremely tender on the inside. The temperature (medium rare) was nailed and it was well seasoned. No salt or pepper required, the kitchen had it nailed.
Perhaps the most disappointing part of the evening was the fact that we had the restaurant to ourselves! I was stunned to hear from the waitress that business had been a little slower, especially since the Ryan Braun news came out over the summer. This restaurant serves up some of the best food outside of downtown that I have ever had, has the best atmosphere of any restaurant in the suburbs, and is priced perfectly. This place should be packed. So for all of our Brookfield followers, check out HOM Woodfired.
